O V E R V I E W
Teaching yoga 1-2-1 is a unique experience and we believe a modality in its own right. In order to realise the full potential of working 1-2-1, it is necessary to cultivate a level of deep awareness, which extends both to our clients and ourselves in physical, mental and emotional relationship. In this way, a profound and lasting transformation becomes possible.
We are delighted to be offering the UK’s first in-depth training in this rewarding and specialist field.
This two-year training aims to give you the skills and resources to work one-to-one with a particular analysis on how yoga becomes therapeutic. Drawing on insights and theories within yoga, body psychotherapy and developmental movement, we will explore how embodiment impacts our capacity for relationship whilst exploring the innate and profound intelligence of the body. It will deepen your teaching skills to effectively meet the needs of the individual and develop your relational skills for working with the depth and intimacy. It will also aim to highlight how working in an embodied and relational way leads to working therapeutically.
The training is divided into two separate years. The first year will take your body through a process of discovery and integration as we explore what asana, movement and alignment is through experience. We will learn how to read a body, understand compensation and complexity and develop the capacity to find and see integration within movement and asana. This year is body focused and will give you a fundamental approach which works practically with the broad diversity of bodies essential for working 1-2-1.
In Year two we will focus on psychological process with particular attention upon how we organise our sense of self through the tissues of our body and vice versa. Emphasis will be placed on the relational aspect of working 1-2-1 and much of the material in this year is influenced by Embodied Relational Therapy (developed by Nick Totton and Em Edmonson in the late 1980’s). With greater psychological insight, we can identify which approaches may be helpful, both physically and relationally and which ones are not. This year is about gaining clarity of your psychological material and how it manifests in your body and how it will manifest differently in another. This provides a crucial framework to be more available for our clients, to be less triggered by the psychological material which might manifest during sessions and helps us get orientated to be able to offer a deeper, clearer level of support.
Developed out of a shorter training which has run at triyoga in London for the past 7 years, this training supports our trainees and graduates to develop the capacity for deep listening and non-judgmental teaching in a modality which enhances awareness both within the client and teacher which would be impossible to find in a class setting. The significance of this training is that it fundamentally supports the self-development of the teacher who is encouraged to be held and in process through a supervisory relationship with a senior teacher throughout and beyond the training. Supervision is common in the field of psychotherapy whereby the therapist discusses their work with clients as a means to explore the themes and dynamics within it. This provides crucial insight and support for the therapist, is often ongoing and can be seen as providing a wider container to hold the demands of the work. A good supervisor supports both the work that is going on with the client and the therapist themselves. However, this form of support is rare within the yoga community and yet psychological material will manifest when we move the body with awareness. Yoga supervision offers the acceptance and understanding of this phenomenon and we train our teachers to find creative and useful ways to hold and process this material with their clients whilst holding clear boundaries. Yoga supervision becomes an obvious and practical branch of the work during this training.
We are also developing a community of teachers who are using their teaching practice as a means of self-discovery. In many ways teaching yoga can be a lonely profession and we believe it is crucial to offer spaces to come together to share our understanding, insights and challenges. The tone of the training fosters deep connection with others and we regularly offer group supervision days.
M O D U L E C O N T E N T
Y E A R 1:
• What is asana? Understanding movement and alignment principles and how a movement or pose becomes therapeutic.
• Body reading in asana and movement exploring structural types, developmental movement patterns and our kinetic language.
• Imbalance and compensation, why are we doing what we’re doing?
• ERT principles: contact, information gathering, amplification, integration and how they can be applied to a yoga therapy session.
• The relationship between bone, muscles, fascia, nerves etc. Understanding different tissue types and how they affect our sense of embodiment and how this influences our approach.
• The relevance for soft tissue work, taking charge through the bones vs muscle or both and how this affects us relationally.
• Working in a person-centered way and using intuition
• Boundaries and ethics
• Breath – the interface between body and mind
Y E A R 2:
• Character theory and each of the six character positions – Boundary, Oral, Control, Holding, Thrusting & Crisis. How to work with character material in a non-pathologising way and how to use it as a means to orientate and relate. We will explore our own character positions and how they influence our experience, movement and yoga practice.
• Psychotherapeutic ABC – transference, counter-transference, projection, projective identification and enactment and how they influence and shape the therapeutic relationship providing a useful source of information.
• Amplification as a means to invite process and the use and timing of intervention.
• Sharpening our skills of listening and exploring all of the various channels available.
• Finding resonance, intuition and following a process. How to explore and work with something that may be ‘trying to happen’ without necessarily knowing what it is that we’re working on. Where are we being led by our clients and what is the information that is being gathered, trying to say?
• How kinetic language relates to psychological functioning and the relevance of movement patterns/body types which relate to character.
• What do we mean by Yoga and how can we use it therapeutically? Where does yoga end and therapy begin? We’ll explore the psychosomatic in a yoga 1-2-1 and develop an understanding and framework for ways to work that feel safe and effective.
• How to apply this approach when working with trauma, dissociation, hyper and hypo arousal and the window of tolerance.
• Working at the edge
• Continuing to develop a distinct and cohesive connection to your own body which will enable you to pay great attention to the subtle movements, rhythms and non-verbal patterns that continually emerge in the client and therapist relationship.
Explorations will be done through experiential exercises in pairs, small groups and as a whole group, working as therapists in supervised practical sessions. Each module in the second year will introduce a new character position.
W H O I S T H I S C O U R S E F O R ?
• Yoga teachers looking to dive deeper into their own psychological process and conditioning and using yoga a means of assisted self-discovery.
• Those who are working one-to-one or interested in developing this aspect of working and wish to explore bringing in the connection between body and mind in a therapeutic way.
• Those who (may) already have a good understanding of the principles behind Embodied Relational Yoga via some form of study or supervision with Kate and wish to take their understanding further.
A P P L I C A T I O N P R O C E S S
Applicants are invited to apply for both years separately since not everyone will want to continue into a deeper psychological process. Applicants must have been teaching yoga for a minimum of two years (students who are completing a 2 year teacher training will be considered). Applicants will need to complete the application form and will be then be invited to have an interview either on the phone or one in person. Since there will be space and time for psychological process throughout the two years (though this will be emphasised in the second year), students will need to have good self -awareness and be open to the challenges of growth work and personal development.
